Long after Allie had gone to bed, I thought about Luke. He was quite attractive and kind and seemed to have a sense of humor. The man gave me a cactus and had a cat named Peaches. But mostly what I thought about was whether Luke could have killed Mrs. Heard. His house was across the road from where she died, and she had been killed with his pitchfork. But he didn’t seem to know her. In fact, other than Bette, it didn’t seem like Luke knew anyone in town. I wondered if he knew Mrs. Stramtussle. Perhaps she owned not only the properties on Castlerock but also those on Grimly Flats. I was unsure how to find that out, though I might simply be able to ask one of Mrs. Stramtussle’s kids. One thing was certain, if Luke was by himself the night Mrs. Heard died, with only his cat to vouch for him, he was another suspect without an alibi.
